Mary Sorrells - Fiberartist

Mary Peeper Sorrells was born and raised in Apache, Oklahoma. She moved to Tulsa in 1964, upon graduating from Oklahoma State Univeristy with a Bachelor of Music Education degree.

She taught for Tulsa Public Schools for 30 years. She also taught in Maple Hill and Dover, Kansas for three years. During that time, she earned a Master's Degree in Music Education from the University of Tulsa.

Upon retiring from teaching, she began her career in basket making and quilting. She has made over 85 quilts and about 900 baskets in the past eight years.

She has a studio in her home in Corpus Christi. She has also taught classes at the Pioneer Woman's Museum in Ponca City, the Basket Weaver's Guild of OK's yearly retreat, and in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Mary is a past president of the Basket Weaver's Guild of OK, and a member of the Missouri Basketweaver's Guild, the Michigan Basketweaver's Assn, and the Green Country Quilter's Guild.

She has over 200 ribbons on her baskets and quilts, and has recently taken up pottery. She makes pottery bases and weaves on them to make one of a kind sculptured pieces.

Mary won Best of Show in basketry at both the Oklahoma State Fair and the Tulsa State Fair in 2007.

Mary makes all kinds of baskets. Her pieces have been displayed at the Fiberworks Art Show in OK City, the Colony's Art Show in OK City, the Pioneer Woman's Museum in Ponca City, and at the Bascom-Louise Gallery in Highlands, North Carolina. Her works have also found homes in private collections in the U. S.

She and Bob has been married for 43 years, and they have two sons, and one grandaughter.
