Mary Sorrells - Fiberartist

Mary Peeper Sorrells was born and raised in Apache, Oklahoma. She moved to Tulsa in 1964, upon graduating from Oklahoma State University with a Bachelor of Music Education degree.

She taught for Tulsa Public Schools for 30 years. She also taught in Maple Hill and Dover, Kansas for three years. During that time, she earned a Master's Degree in Music Education from the University of Tulsa.

Upon retiring from teaching, she began her career in basket making and quilting. She has made 175 quilts, woven over 1000 baskets, and decorated about 75 gourds.

She has a studio in her home in Corpus Christi. She has also taught classes at the Pioneer Woman's Museum in Ponca City, for the Basket Weaver's Guild of OK, in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, at the Art Center of Corpus Christi, and at the Art Center for the Islands in Port Aransas. Mary is a past president of the Basket Weaver's Guild of OK, and is a member of the Coastal Bend Quilt Guild, the Texas Gourd Society's Coastal Bend Gourd Patch, the Rockport Art Center, and the Art Center of Corpus Christi.

She has over 200 ribbons on her baskets and quilts. Mary won Best of Show in basketry at both the Oklahoma State Fair and the Tulsa State Fair in 2007.

Mary makes all kinds of baskets. Her pieces have been displayed at the Fiberworks Art Show in OK City, the Colony's Art Show in OK City, the Pioneer Woman's Museum in Ponca City, the Bascom-Louise Gallery in Highlands, North Carolina, the Art Center of Corpus Christi, the Art Center for the Islands in Port Aransas, Texas, and the Rockport Art Center in Rockport, Texas.

Bob and she have been married for 51 years. They have two sons, and one grandaughter.
